Thinking about volunteering to drive for CalVans?

If you enjoy the convenience of driving to work or school, and like the idea of putting the miles on someone else’s vehicle, you may be the ideal CalVans driver. This volunteer position enables you to gain free access to a late-model van that won’t cost you extra to maintain or insure.

You simply share in the travel expenses with all the riders in your van.

It’s quick and easy to apply to drive a CalVans vehicle. Once you are approved and become an authorized driver, you will receive all the benefits of a rider and more. As a CalVans driver you will be able to taxi your children between home and their childcare facility, and you may even stop for groceries on your way home.

Requirements for General Vanpool Drivers (Non-Ag Related Occupations)

• Have a valid Class C license
• Have five or more years licensed driving experience
• Be at least twenty-one years of age
• Pass a Class B physical exam
• Have a clean DMV driving record
• Wash van and maintain it clean/sanitized during the pandemic.
• Purchase gasoline for the van with the credit card provided by CalVans.
• Volunteer (Driving for CalVans is not a paid position.)
• Operate vanpool in a nonprofit manner
• Collect the predetermined fare directly from riders
• Fill out a “CalVans Payments” report and include it with payments
• Remit all payments to the CalVans office
• Follow all the rules detailed in the Driver Agreement
• Set own rules for passengers regarding:

pick-up/drop-off locations and times

Steps to Start Driving

Start your own vanpool by following five simple steps.

Step 1:

Identify fellow workers willing to share a ride to and from your worksite. Depending on the number of riders, you will be assigned a 7-, 8- or 15-passenger van. Determine which riders would agree to serve as backup drivers when necessary.

Step 2:

Fill out the Driver Application Form on this website. CalVans will review California DMV records for each driver’s license submitted. Applicants with more than 2 points, a DUI, a reckless driving citation or a hit and run violation within the past 5 years will not be accepted.

Step 3:

Provide proof of a recent Class B physical exam for you and all backup drivers. If needed, you may call the CalVans office at (866) 655-5444 for assistance scheduling your physical or click here to find an authorized physician in your area.

Step 4:

Upon acceptance, a CalVans representative will contact you to schedule a brief orientation, to include daily operating procedures, requirements for submitting payments, and developing your Driver/Rider Agreement.

Step 5:

Receive a fuel card and the keys to the CalVans vehicle assigned to you.
