Steps to Start Driving
Start your own vanpool by following five simple steps.
Step 1:
Identify fellow workers willing to share a ride to and from your worksite. Depending on the number of riders, you will be assigned a 7, 8, 10, 13 or 15 occupant van. Determine which riders would agree to serve as backup drivers when necessary. They too must pass all requirements.
Step 2:
Fill out the Driver Application Form on this website. CalVans will review California DMV records for each driver’s license submitted.
Applicants with;
- More than 2 DMV points;
- A DUI;
- A Reckless driving; or
- A Hit and Run conviction within the past 5 years (at the time of application) will not qualify to drive until all requirements are met.
Step 3:
If your DMV Driver Record is cleared, you will be required to submit to a Class B exam. This is only required if you plan to driver a larger van.
Provide proof of a recent Class B physical exam for you and all backup drivers.
If needed, call the CalVans office at 1 (866) 655-5444 for assistance scheduling your physical or click here to find an authorized physician in your area.
Step 4:
Upon acceptance, a CalVans representative will contact you to schedule a new volunteer driver orientation to include daily operating procedures, safety videos, submitting payments, fueling up, safety inspections and developing your Driver/Rider Agreement.
