At the beginning of his career, Fabian Cruz’s main focus has been the strawberry harvest. It’s been a part of his life. For 30 years Fabian Cruz has been working in agriculture. Recently, he and the company he works for have switched focus to blackberries.
The harvesting of the blackberry is a year-round job. They start with the Floricana Blackberry that grows from March through July. The Primocane is grown next, which starts in June and is harvested in November.
Fabian and his team work the land; they plant the seed and help the blackberry grow by training it, allowing the blackberries to grow to their fullest potential. For one who is unfamiliar with the process, it might seem like a lot of work, but Fabian enjoys working outside.
“I’m outdoors; I like very much working out in the open,” he said.
Another thing he enjoys is being a CalVans volunteer driver.

Before CalVans was introduced by the company he works for, Fabian and his crew would drive between five and six company trucks in order to transport people.
Although the trucks have a lot of room in the back for tools and other supplies, the passengers felt cramped inside.
The trucks would sometimes break down; often leaving the crew stranded without a vehicle and their employer left with a huge mechanical bill to pay.
Now that Fabian and his crew drive a CalVans vehicle, he said he’s noticed a difference.
“I have noticed that it’s a little more economical,” he said. “The trucks spent more gas than with the vans.”
With the vans, there is hardly any use for the shop they have on-site. There is no more worry about the maintenance because everything is included with CalVans, including gasoline.
